My Godness, these are Sütterlin characters! My mother used them, I fear I forgot how to identify... sorry

It cannot be Süterlin as this was introduced from 1908. It is however a form of Kurrentschrift mixed with some Latin based characters, largely atypical of a mixed and/or autodidactic education, however a foreign national would often write German in such a mixed script

Post the message side where the likes of Bayern Klassisch or Erdinger can read it. My knowledge of this script is poor. As stated above it is not Süterlin, though the scripts share certain characters. from a historical point both scripts have their origins in the chancellry script of the late middle ages.

Realising this is not the answer you wished to hear, I hope someonewill be able to provide a transcription at least, which a number here can readily translate.

The Names in the message that I can read are A Moritz and Sir Jacob W Montag.

The scan would also benefit from having the script highlighted, at points it is quite faint and difficult to ascertain the characters.

kind regards

nigel

The signature could be short for Friedrich.

"Your good wishes helped me to have a very pleasant journey. I feel fresh and enjoy a healthy sleep, as does GvM (name?). Since three days weather is springtime-like. Today 8.00 o'clock dinner at A. Moritz's with Sir John W. Monday 7th at Mac Donalds official presentation of the "..gift of honour" at Gilbey's. Best regards to Ella, W....(name?) and all of Ranzin (..name of the town the card has been sent to..). Signature "F.v.H." (..most probably "F von Homeyer" - (the pc could have been sent to his wife..)

kind regards - Rolf

Thanks for your excellent translation. The sender must be a certain Friedrich von Homeyer, he appears to have been a landowner in Ranzin:

Rolf,
thank you. I do not care that much about the price it could fetch. It is just interesting to see that somebody in Victorian London would pay an extra 4d (four times the foreign postcard postage) just to hurry his card in the railway station to catch the Continental Night Mail!
